Sri Lanka, The second biggest gainer in the world

According to the latest Global Competitiveness Report for 2010-2011 prepared by the World Economic Forum, Sri Lanka ranked 62nd place. Important thing is Sri Lanka has gained 17 positions marking the second highest gain.

Failed States Index & Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka ranks 25th among Failed States Index-2010. Somalia tops the index and our neighbours India, Pakistan and Bungladesh rank 79, 10 and 24. It is good to see that SL has moved 3 positions down from last year (22).

This index is calculated based on several social, economic, and political indicators. Anyway people have lot of criticism on this index. Most of the western countries which back terrorism should be in 'top failed countries'.

අවුරුදු නිවාඩු දවස්වල පවුලෙ අයත් එක්ක නුවර එළියෙ පැත්තෙ යන අතර අපිත් රාවණා ඇල්ල අසළ දහවල් කෑම ගත්ත. නිවාඩු දවස් නිසා හොදටම සෙනග. පරිසරයත් සමග මුසු වෙලා විනෝද වෙනවා. නමුත් හිතා හෝ නොහිතා හෝ පරිසරයටම හානි කරනවා.

කෑම ටික කාලා හරිම පහසුවෙන් කිසිම වග විභාගයකින් තොරව ඉතුරු කෑම, පාර්සල් හා අපද්‍රව්‍ය අසළ කාණුවට තමයි දාන්නෙ (බහුතරයක් දෙනා). ටිකක් එහාට මෙහාට උනොත් කසළ එකතු කරන තැනකට දාන්න පුළුවන්, නැත්නම් තමන් පැමිණි වාහනයේ අරගෙන යන්න පුළුවන්.

බහුතරයකගෙ මතය "අපි විතරක් ඔහොම කළා කියල ඇති ඵලය මොකක්ද" කියන එකයි. අපිට මේ තත්ත්වය වෙනස් කරන්න පුළුවන් ආකල්පමය වෙනසකින් පමණයි. බොහෝ කුඩා දරුවන් තුළ පාසල් අධ්‍යාපනය තුළින් මේ සම්බන්ධව හොද නැඹුරුතාවයයක් පෙනෙනවා.

දෙයක් තේරුම් ගතහැකි අයට, සහ විශේෂයෙන් අපේ දරු පරම්පරාවට හැකි තරම් මේ පණිවිඩය දෙන්න උත්සාහ කරමු. අපි ආදර්ශමත් වෙලා සැබෑ උත්සාහයක් ගත්තොත් වෙනසක් කරන්න පුළුවන් කියල මම අත්දැකීමෙන් දන්නවා...

සිංහල හින්දු අලුත් අවුරුද්ද වටිනාකම් වලින් පිරි උත්සවයක්. සමාජයීය සහ සංස්කෘතිමය වශයෙන් එහි ඇති වටිනාකම් ඉස්මතු වන අයුරින් සැමරුවොත් හැමෝටම සාමය සහ සතුට ළඟා වෙයි.

Plastic waste to petrol

A pilot project has been launched to convert petrol from plastic waste in Sri Lanka. The success of this kind of projects will depend on the commercial viability. However, this would be an ideal solution for the plastic waste problem which creates immense damages to the environment. Therefore, the technology needs to be further improved and managed to make it viable.

According to the adaderana.lk, this is the world’s first pilot project to convert plastic waste to petrol and the technology has been innovated by Prof. Mrs. Alka U. Zadgaonkar. ‘Sinhale Hot News’ reports the inventor as a Sri Lankan called Mr. Withanage. Successfulness of the project is a different story, but if the person behind this is a Sri Lankan, he should be respected.

Akon, Tourism, Buddhism

Government Information Department has announced that Sri Lanka has rejected issuing visa for popular singer Akon for the scheduled concert in Sri Lanka. This kind of concerts will undoubtedly help in promoting tourism in Sri Lanka with more awareness.
Moreover, these kinds of visa refusals would create a bad image for the country.

Nevertheless, who can justify for insulting a religion? Who can believe the statement made by Akon that he was not aware that he was dancing around a Buddha Statue? If he is a spiritual man (as he says), he should apologize from Buddhists.

Obviously, protesting is not the answer, and this is not the first or the last incident which insulted the Buddhism. On the other hand, Buddhists should not worry about what others do until they do the right things. Therefore, Buddhists should do the needful consciously without being aggressive.

Main reason behind this is obviously the end of 30 year war against terrorism. Several other agencies have ranked Sri Lanka as best tourist destination. Government is taking several initiatives, and it is reported that most of the star class hotels are being renovated to cater the future demand.

Political stability and the good image of the country are vital if we are to get the maximum benefit. Therefore, everybody (especially in the political arena) should have a clear vision to achieve this common goal.
